Blue Hour (Black & White) by Paul Haddon Photography
Monochrome Majesty
This striking panoramic image showcases Torquay’s harbour at twilight, rendered in a captivating monochrome palette. The absence of colour amplifies the play of light and shadow, creating a dramatic and sophisticated aesthetic. The two prominent towers stand out against the darkened sky.
Harbour’s Silent Symphony
The harbours lights shimmer, transforming the scene into an elegant display of contrasts. Moreover, the buildings along the hillside add depth and texture to the composition. The stillness of the water perfectly reflects the lights, mirroring the city’s glow.
Coastal Calm in Shades of Grey
Despite the absence of colour, the image is incredibly rich. Furthermore, the photograph effectively captures the serenity of the evening. The details remain sharp; every building and light is clearly defined, even without the vibrancy of colour.
Timeless Torquay
This monochrome representation offers a timeless quality. As a result, it elevates the artistic impact. Paul skillfully uses light to highlight key features, creating a visual narrative that transcends the limitations of colour.

Early Inspiration
At just 14 years old, Paul Haddon discovered his passion for photography when he picked up his dad’s film camera. He spent hours capturing moments with his best friend, Rebel, a German Shepherd. This newfound interest led Paul to enroll in a night school photography course, where he mastered both “O” and “A” level standards within two years.
Pursuit of Unusual Subjects
Paul has always had a fascination with photographing unusual subjects. He remembers haunting cemeteries during late hours, eager to capture that magical play of light on gravestones and churches, sometimes frightening himself in the process. Although work and family commitments temporarily halted his photography pursuits, the advent of digital photography rekindled his enthusiasm two decades later. He eagerly bought his first digital camera to explore the art form again.
Commercial Success and New Ventures
Paul’s first commercial success was a panoramic montage of the Back Beach in Teignmouth, which he sold in his restaurant. As demand for his framed photography grew, he ventured into the picture framing and Fine Art industries. This journey led to the creation of Haddon Galleries in Torquay.
Exploring the World
Today, Paul has the opportunity to travel to exotic locations, capturing an array of subjects from wildlife to street life and landscapes to seascapes. He finds endless amazement and inspiration in nature and the beauty of our world. Transitioning from film to digital photography has allowed Paul to pursue his passion with renewed vigour and creativity.
