The “Arts and Craft Summer Vase” by Moorcroft
A stunning example of ceramic artistry. The vase features a deep, rich blue background, which serves as a canvas for the vibrant floral designs.
A Symphony of Colour
The floral motifs are rendered in a variety of colours, including shades of red, pink, orange, yellow, and green. These colours blend harmoniously, creating a lively and eye-catching display. The flowers and leaves are intricately detailed, showcasing the skill and craftsmanship of the Moorcroft artisans.
Form and Function
The vase has a classic shape, with a rounded body that tapers towards the neck. This design is both aesthetically pleasing and functional, making it suitable for displaying flowers or as a standalone decorative piece. The glossy finish enhances the colours and adds to the overall elegance of the vase.
A Timeless Treasure
Indeed, the “Arts and Craft Summer Vase” is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Arts and Crafts movement. Its timeless design and high-quality craftsmanship make it a valuable addition to any collection. Furthermore, it is a beautiful way to bring a touch of nature into your home.
In fact, the design seems to echo the beauty of the Hypericum, or Rose of Sharon, a semi-evergreen woody shrub. This shrub flowers during July, August, and September. Generally speaking, virtually all are yellow flowered and favour a sunny position with reasonable drainage and a moisture-retentive soil. They sit comfortably within mixed borders and are easy to grow and have a lengthy flowering period. Gradually, garden centres are beginning to stock more varieties as this plant group really does deserve to be seen and used more often.
Rachel has designed three pieces as a small clock, tray, and vase based upon a compact hybrid Hypericum called Hypericum x moserianum. This first-rate small shrub, usually not more than 50cm high, makes an excellent ground cover plant with arching stems. Flowers, 5-6cm across, have conspicuous reddish anthers borne from July to October, and these are clearly depicted. They help lift the design together with the typical pinkish-red stems and overall golden-yellow flowers, and their repetition creates a subtle, very pleasing composition. Importantly, it turns full circle from Rachel’s original design when she was a very new member of the Moorcroft team, before the present Design Studio was born in 1997.
William Moorcroft and the Early Years:
William Moorcroft, a graduate of the Royal College of Art (now), began designing pottery in 1897 while working for James Macintyre & Co.
His innovative Florian Ware, characterized by hand-painted designs and a unique “tube-lining” technique, gained immediate recognition and a gold medal at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.
Moorcroft’s work was highly sought after by prestigious stores like Liberty of London, Harrods, and Tiffany & Co., establishing the brand’s reputation for artistic quality and investment value.
In 1913, with funding from Liberty, William established his own factory, W. Moorcroft Ltd, in Sandbach Road.
In 1928, Moorcroft was appointed “Potters to H.M. The Queen,” a testament to the company’s quality and the esteem in which it was held.
Walter Moorcroft and the Legacy:
After William’s death in 1945, his son Walter Moorcroft took over the family business, continuing the tradition of artistic excellence.
Walter introduced new designs, including exotic flowers and landscapes, expanding the range of Moorcroft’s work.
In 1998, Moorcroft established a Design Studio, fostering a new generation of ceramic artists and designers.
Moorcroft continues to be a leader in the art pottery world, known for its unique designs, meticulous craftsmanship, and enduring legacy.
