A Collector’s Guide to Giclée Limited Edition Prints: Excellence at Haddon Galleries

Welcome to Haddon Galleries. Whether you are visiting our Torquay gallery in person or browsing our collection online, you may have noticed the term "Giclée" (pronounced ‘zhee-clay’) associated with our limited edition.

If you are new to art collecting, understanding the difference between a standard reproduction and a Giclée is essential. At Haddon Galleries, we pride ourselves on offering the highest calibre of limited edition art, alongside more affordable unsigned and open edition prints. Because all our pieces are Giclée prints, they offer exceptional longevity and superior quality.

What Exactly is a Giclée Print?

Derived from the French term for "to spray," a Giclée is a bespoke, high-resolution digital print. However, it is far removed from a common poster. To create a Giclée, professional-grade inkjet technology is used to apply a vast palette of pigment-based inks onto archival surfaces.

At Haddon Galleries, we ensure all our prints are of a high quality and offer great value for money. This means the art you buy today is guaranteed to remain as vibrant and breathtaking for many years from the moment you first hang it on your wall.

The Exclusivity of a "Limited Edition"

When an artist releases a Limited Edition Giclée through Haddon Galleries, they are making a formal commitment to the collector. They pledge to produce only a specific number of copies—for instance, an edition of 50, 150, or 250.

Scarcity and Value: Once an edition is sold out, it is never printed again. This inherent scarcity is a key factor in art investment in the UK, as it often allows the artwork to hold or even appreciate in value over time.

The Artist’s Hand: Most of our UK artists hand-sign and number each print in pencil (e.g., 1/150). This acts as a personal seal of approval, confirming that the artist has personally inspected the piece and found it to meet their professional standards.

The Hallmark of Quality: Archival Standards

For a print to be considered "museum-quality" at Haddon Galleries, it must pass three rigorous tests:

Lightfast Inks: We use pigment-based inks that score a 6 or higher on the ‘Blue Wool Scale.’ Simply put, your art is designed to resist fading for 75 to 100 years under normal display conditions.

Acid-Free Paper (Substrate): We use archival-grade paper, typically 100% cotton or alpha-cellulose. Unlike standard paper, which turns yellow and brittle, our archival quality prints remain crisp, white, and structurally sound for a century.

The Certificate of Authenticity (COA):

Most limited edition prints from Haddon Galleries are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. This document serves as the essential ‘logbook’ for your artwork, detailing the artist’s name, the edition size, and the rigorous technical specifications used in its creation.

It is important to note that while many collectors look for a hand-signature, some limited editions may be unsigned or without certificate—often the case with prestigious estate editions or specific studio releases. Please be assured that the archival integrity, and the strict edition limits remain exactly the same whether a signature is present or not. In these instances, the COA becomes your primary guarantee of the print’s provenance and its status as a genuine, high-quality work of art.

Supporting the Arts: The UK Artist’s Resale Right

When you invest in a limited edition print from a reputable UK gallery like Haddon Galleries, you are supporting a thriving creative community. It is worth noting that under the UK Artist’s Resale Right, if a work by a living artist is resold through a professional dealer for a significant amount, the artist may receive a small royalty. This further cements the status of your Giclée as a professional, recognised piece of fine art.

Preserving Your Investment

To ensure your museum quality art reproduction lasts a lifetime, Haddon Galleries recommends the following care:

Professional Framing: Always use a framer who adheres to Fine Art Trade Guild conservation standards.

UV Protection: If your room receives a great deal of natural sunlight, consider UV-protective glass.

Environmental Stability: Fine art prefers a stable environment; avoid hanging your prints in areas of high moisture, such as bathrooms.
