Study of The Italian Job Lives III by Tony Smith
Tony Smith: An Artistic Journey
From an early age, Tony Smith knew he wanted to be an artist. Growing up in Birmingham, he and his brother Gerald were immersed in the world of art. They watched their father paint for a living at home, surrounded by the scents of linseed oil and turps. Drawing pictures of their interests became second nature.
Early Career
After Tony graduated from art school with a distinction, his parents encouraged him to seek stable employment, understanding the uncertainty of the art world. Consequently, he worked at a large advertising agency in Birmingham for five years. Following that, he served a year of national service as an infantryman. He was not happy in either role, and painting remained his true passion.
Artistic Focus
Tony’s subjects vary from portraits and drawings of planes to trains and military scenes. However, he is most dedicated to capturing the speed and excitement of motor racing.
The Bertie Bear Trademark
Since the death of his friend and fellow artist, Terence Cuneo, Tony has included a small “trademark” animal in his paintings. But it isn’t the famous Cuneo Mouse; instead, it’s a small, sometimes animated teddy bear named Bertie. Look closely, you may see it in the work.
