The Hare Moon by Jackie Morris

Early Life and Inspiration

Jackie Morris was born in Birmingham. At four, her family moved to Evesham, where she grew up. Although memories from those early years are sparse, her passion for art was crystal clear. At age six, after watching her father draw a lapwing, she resolved to master the art of drawing. She found magic in creating birds with pencil and paper.

Education and Challenges

Jackie attended Prince Henry’s High School in Evesham. Her school days were often spent dreaming and drawing, habits that teachers frowned upon then, but now define her career. Jackie later attended college in Hereford and then Exeter. During her time at Exeter, educators doubted her potential as an illustrator. Despite this, she pursued her dream and moved on to Bath Academy, where the graceful peacocks influenced her work.

Professional Journey

After completing her studies, Jackie briefly lived in London near Balham High Road. She believed London was essential for those in the publishing world. With determination, she presented her portfolio to various magazine and book publishers. That effort resulted in seven years of work with prominent publications such as The New Statesman, Independent, and The Guardian. She also created designs for Greenpeace and Amnesty International. Eventually, Jackie stumbled upon children’s book illustration, marking a new chapter in her career.

Settling in Wales

Jackie moved to Wales just before starting her first project, “Jo’s Storm” by Caroline Pitcher. Since then, she has lived in a charming, though fragile, cottage. Her home is vibrant, with her children Tom and Hannah, two unique dogs, and several ginger cats named Maurice, Pixie, Elmo, Martha, and Max. The blend of nature, family, and pets continues to inspire her creative journey.
